Dmitri Kalinin Finally Leaves the NHL
July 21st, 2009 | by Vance |In a move that should come as a surprise to no one, former Sabres defensemen, and 1st round pick, Dmitri Kalinin has left the NHL, seemingly for good, as he’s signed a 2 year contract with Salavat Yulaev.
If you’d recall, Kalinin signed as a UFA with the New York Rangers last offseason for $2.1 million dollars on a one year deal. Finished laughing yet? Ok, good. Well he was offloaded during the trade deadline to Phoenix along with Petr Prucha and Nigel Dawes for Derek Morris. He continued to be just Dmitri Kalinin, and as a result, was left without a deal in the NHL this season.
He’s joining Alex Radulov and Viktor Kozlov on the KHL champion Salavat Yulaev squad. To say goodbye to Dmitri (good riddance?), here’s a video of probably the single greatest moment of his career: hip checking Sidney Crosby.
