Armchair GM Round 11 Pick: Jordan Leopold

September 1st, 2009 | by Vance |

Well it’s been a while since my turn came up in the draft.  But late last night the Sabres were once again called to the podium.  Things are starting to get interesting for this roster, as it’s beginning to resemble the bane of GM’s everywhere, top heavy salary wise.  With anywhere from 9 to 13 picks left in the draft, I sit with only $16.5 million left in cap space, or if you’d rather, around an average of $1.65 million per selection.  So what’s that mean?  Cheap vets and promising rookies.

With that in mind, with the 326th pick of the Armchair GM draft, these Buffalo Sabres have selected Jordan Leopold, making him the 3rd defensemen on the roster.  This is another transition blueliner, but how does he differentiate himself from Liles, our 9th round pick?  Well, he doesn’t, that’s why he went 2 rounds later.  But, this gives me a little more flexibility in the PP as well as creates 2 defense pairings that can move the puck vertically up ice.

Splitting last season between Colorado (poor bastard) and then Calgary, Leopold put up 7 goals and 17 assists.  Averaging around 18:00 of ice time per night, Leopold got about 2 minutes PP time, and a little over 1 minute short.  Again, more flexibility for the lineup.

I should end up making another pick this afternoon, so look for another installment of this later today.
