A Weekend To Watch

November 16th, 2009 | by Vance |

And naturally of course; I missed it.  A mini-vacation was needed, and taken, and I missed probably one of the most promising 3 games in 4 nights stretch these Sabres have had since post-CDDB.

Now of course these wins are going to spawn all sorts of ‘Has this team turned the corner?’ and ‘These Sabres are for real’ posts all across the blogosphere, which naturally, I will probably be guilty of, eventually.

But I think this weekend was very important for a couple of points; of which, I will now point out.

  1. Finally Some Coaching – In the most apparent coaching shift that Lindy has made since we heard the term “accountability”, the Sabres shifted defensive schemes from Friday to Saturday.  Hopefully mitigating the difference between a well rested Flyers club and the worn out Sabres.  It worked. I know, we all hate Lamoriello for the 1-3-1, but I can stand it for one game.
  2. The Stats Don’t Lie – Ryan Miller was 9-2-1 in the front end of back to backs last season, and 4-4-2 in the 2nd game.  Patrick Lalime was 1-3-0 in the front, 1-4-1 in the back.  It can’t happen every week.  But why not start Lalime Wednesday, then have Miller play the back to back?  Just a thought.

Now it seems like both Lydman and Stafford will be back and ready to go on Wednesday.  Tyler Ennis, he of a 1 point per game average…in 1 career NHL game, has already been sent back to Portland.

I’ll have the Fantasy Focus tomorrow.  Need to get back to work.
