Ryan Miller Recognized; Finally

November 16th, 2009 | by Vance |

Ryan MillerYet still the Sabres get slighted. This week, finally, Ryan Miller was recognized as a “Player of the Week” by the NHL. Of course, he could be at the top of the list of players this entire season, but at least he’s finally recognized for his play this season.

So where’s the slight come in? Well, in the article announcing the stars, let’s check out Ryan Millers paragraph. From John Kreiser…

Ryan Miller — In a season that has seen several goaltenders get off to blazing starts, no one has done more with less than Miller, who won all three of his starts last week while allowing only four goals — even though his team scored only six non-empty netters. He leads the League in wins (12), goals-against average (1.77) and save percentage (.939)

God, here I thought some of those “blazing starts” came from the likes of Ilya Bryzgalov and Craig Anderson, oh you know, the starting goaltenders of Phoenix and Colorado.  It’s just lazy writing.

Unless I misconstrued his point, maybe Mr. Kreiser was pointing out the Sabres relatively low goal total, if so, then Mr. Kreiser, you’re simply a bad writer.

That said, congratulations to Millsie for the honor, even though I’m sure he likes the Ws far more than what Johnny Boy has to say.

When you consider the initial shock of Anderson and Bryzgalov having good starts, you kind of understand why Miller was being slighted. He’s always one of the best goalies in the league, but I think this is the first time that we could actually consider him “the” best goalie in the NHL.

I was surprised when Phoenix and Colorado had great starts this year, but Miller’s great start did not surprise me.

The Sabres need a good goalie because (like you said in the post) they don’t score a lot of goals. They have to have a strong defense every time they step on the ice and Miller is one of the few goalies that can take that pressure.
